A new sidewalk in Pierson Place Historic District is making it easier to navigate the neighborhood.

The sidewalk on the east side of 3rd Avenue from Camelback Road south to the Grand Canal is almost a half-mile long. It covers six blocks going east/west from Central Avenue to 7th Avenue and is the only sidewalk in the Pierson Place neighborhood. The sidewalk offers increased safety to the many residents who walk to and from the canal every day with dogs and baby strollers, said Charley Jones, president of the Pierson Place Historic District.

To get the sidewalk built, proponents submitted an application and a petition with signatures from more than 75 percent of adjacent neighbors, Jones said. He added that the design and engineering stage for the sidewalk process lasted for about 14 months and some underground utilities were moved.
