The Washington Street Foundation recently visited Tropical Sno & Creamery and Onyx Wall Coverings at 1219 E. Glendale Ave. for an engaging, hands-on look at how small businesses operate. The group of young people, accompanied by their mentors, spent the morning learning about entrepreneurship, customer service and the everyday skills that keep a business thriving.
At Onyx Wall Coverings, participants gained insight into the craft of wallpaper installation and the role of customer care in building lasting relationships. They also discussed the importance of marketing and presentation in attracting and retaining clients.
Next door at Tropical Sno & Creamery, the group explored key business concepts such as dealership and franchise models, royalties and product sourcing. They even got to test their new knowledge by learning how to operate the shop’s shave ice machines and creating their own authentic Tropical Sno treats.
Throughout the visit, mentors and business owners emphasized the value of lifelong learning and adapting to change in order to succeed in today’s evolving business landscape. The experience offered an inspiring and memorable glimpse into the rewards and responsibilities of running a small business in the community.
Both Tropical Sno & Creamery and Onyx Wall Coverings said that they were proud to host the October meeting and they expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support the Foundation in its mission to empower and inspire the next generation of leaders.
