Will Giorza, a North Central resident, earned a Skill Point Certificate by coming in eighth place out of 38 challengers who competed in the Related Technical Math portion of the National Skills USA Conference, held June 26-27 in Louisville, Ky.
Skill Point Certificates were awarded in 72 occupational and leadership areas to students who met a threshold contest score. The Skill Point Certificate is a component of SkillsUSA’s assessment program for career and technical education.
In the Related Technical Math competition, contestants take a 50-problem math test that contains problems relating to technical fields such as engineering, as well as problems that test general ideas in areas like geometry and algebra. It’s one of the many contests in the SkillsUSA championships.
Giorza, who is a junior at Paradise Valley High School, qualified for Nationals by winning the Technical Math competition at the Arizona State Skills USA competition in April.
He attends the CREST program at PVHS, which focuses on engineering, computer science and biotechnology. He hopes to major in computer science in college.
The SkillsUSA Championships event is held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. More than 6,500 students from every state in the nation participated in this year’s event.
